Summertime is a busy season. Whether you’re spending the day at the park, watching a sports game, or taking the kids to a summer camp, schedules can fill up quickly. Before you know it, a detailed itinerary of fun summer plans has turned into a long endless to-do list of events and activities to manage. Finding a balance between relaxing and going on summer adventures can be a challenge. Here are some simple ways you can make the most of the sunshine without getting lost in the chaos.

Treat Yourself in Little Ways

Taking care of your body and mind is especially important when life gets busy. In the hustle and bustle of running errands and making appointments, we often forget to stop and care for ourselves. Take a moment to breathe. Meditate during a quiet moment. Have a delicious snack. Drink water to stay cool and hydrated. These simple habits we practice throughout the day improve overall health and wellbeing. It’s the little things in life that can truly make each day shine.

Choose a Flex Day Each Week

There are parts of our schedules we can’t change. Kids' sports games, family events, and appointments have set, immovable times out of our control. It’s important to take some of that control back during the week. Choose a day where there’s nothing pressing on the calendar. No appointments, no events, just a day for you to use as you see fit. If you need a slow day, get someone to watch the kids and kick back with a good book, some calm music, and a nice pair of sunglasses to relax. If you feel up to an adventure, take the family to the park, the beach, or on a day trip. Make time to use however you wish.

Allow Flexibility in Activities

Sometimes our detailed schedules don’t always go as planned. The weather suddenly shifts, cars break down, and playdates get cancelled. A good first step is to take a deep breath. Examine your options and turn the opportunity into something new. Have a family game night. Go for a walk. Turn the setbacks into a fun adventure. Embrace the change with an open mind and allow yourself to be creative. Taking a roadblock and turning it into something fresh builds new and exciting memories together. A change of plans isn’t a failure; it’s an opportunity.

Be Kind to Yourself

When we feel overwhelmed, we tend to put pressure on ourselves to keep achieving. We ask ourselves if we are doing enough, if we are doing things right, or if there's more we should be doing. Noticing when these thoughts appear is the first step to giving yourself some peace. We worry that we need to be a perfect version of ourselves, when you are enough as you are. Be patient with yourself.

Even though schedules fill up quickly during the hot summer months, there are still ways we can find peace in our busy calendars without being entirely overwhelmed. Summer is an excellent time to let strict schedules go and enjoy what comes next. Embrace going with the flow and take advantage of the opportunities that naturally arise. Finding moments of peace and creating new and exciting ways to spend your summer can relieve frustration and even make unforgettable memories. Are you ready to give it a try?
