Fruit and Yogurt Cups Recipe

Fruit and yogurt sound like a perfectly healthy snack. But when you’re a kid, healthy is not exactly that enticing. My kids run from anything that looks remotely healthy. This time of year is filled with many food temptations and sweet treats, so getting kids to eat something that’s good for them is even trickier. So how can you get your child to eat something nutritious without a battle? I’ve found the answer is to make mealtime fun. One way to do that is to add something you know kids love to a food that is new or not a favorite. Most kids love sprinkles. They are colorful and fun. Since you don’t need very many to bring some pizzazz to a snack, you are not adding much sugar. We made these Healthy Yogurt Cups and added a dash of sprinkles.

Another way to get kids to eat healthy is to get them involved in preparing their snack. Kids love being helpful and I’ve noticed that they are more likely to try something if they have a hand in preparing it. Since this is a no-cook recipe it’s perfect for even the smallest of helpers. Your kids can help scoop yogurt into cups. We added enough yogurt to fill 1/3 of each of the small cups.

For each cup you will be adding one strawberry. Cut the bottom part off and set aside. We will be using them later to top our yogurt cups. Cut the rest of the strawberry into small pieces and add on top of the yogurt.

Add a dollop of yogurt to the chopped strawberries. Now you will use the bottom of the strawberry that you set aside. Add it to the top of the dollop of yogurt. My kids thought this looked like a Santa cap.

Now comes the part my kids were really excited about – the sprinkles! I bought a container of sprinkles that had a variety of colors, shapes and textures. My kids each got to pick what sprinkles they wanted in their yogurt cup. Of course letting a child pour sprinkles anywhere can be a messy situation, so before we began we practiced shaking the container while it was still closed. My kids learned how they could gently shake the container to release the sprinkles.

As you can see even just a small addition of sprinkles makes this snack more festive. These Zak cups are perfect for portion control and they come with these adorable spoons which are just the right size for little hands. My kids were so excited to try the snack that they helped make. It was a huge hit, even with big kids like my husband and I.

We had a few cups leftover and the kids asked if they could have another after dinner. That is the mark of a great snack!
