Commitment to Community

There have been times in the past when all Americans have had to stop, take a hard look at their morals and values, and decide which side of history they want to stand on. This is one of those times. The inexcusable injustices that have been committed in recent weeks are just the latest in a long history of injustice perpetrated against the Black community in this country, and the time has come for ALL Americans to stand up and make a commitment to put an end to that injustice forever.

We applaud the efforts of the Black Lives Matter movement and support their goal to bring an end to the systematic racism that has plagued this country for far too long. We admire the many leaders and role models who have bravely come forward to stand up for what’s right and just, and we commend their efforts to encourage others to do the same. We stand in solidarity with the people across the country and around the world who are peacefully protesting the status quo that must change if we have any hope of ever coming together as one nation.

If we use this as a chance to lower our guard, set aside our differences, and come together with the common vision of peace, justice, and acceptance, we will most assuredly find that there is far more that joins us than separates us. If we can find the courage to open our minds and our hearts just a little more; if we step out past the barriers at the far edge of our comfort zone and walk in the footsteps of people who have different backgrounds, or beliefs, or skin color than we do; if we dare to see the world from a point of view that we have failed to recognize until now, then maybe, just maybe, we can finally realize the dream Martin Luther King, Jr. had nearly 60 years ago and live up to the potential our Founding Fathers knew we possessed when they boldly and courageously declared in one united voice that:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that ALL men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Maybe then we will find the true and lasting change that we will be proud to pass down to our children and grandchildren.
